Burwood Church Building

This church was constructed in 1880 by the Congregatonal Fellowship in Burwood.

The Congregatonal Fellowship had been formed in 1864. The first church building was opened in 1869 but was destroyed by fire in 1879. Showing remarkable determination and faith the congregation rebuilt and opened the present church building just 15 months after the fire.

In 1967 Burwood Methodists and Congregationalists began joint services and a joint Sunday School. This joint activity was formalised in 1970 as a Joint Parish, the first in the metropolitan area of Sydney. When the Uniting Church in Australia was formed in 1977, Presbyterians from St James in Burwood who had decided to join the Uniting Church added their number to form the new Burwood Uniting Church congregation.

The church houses a pipe organ which was brought from a church, which was no longer to be used for church services, at Criccieth in Wales. The Burwood church is also graced by many stained glass windows which have been provided as memorials to parishioners.
