Malvern Hill (Croydon) Church Building

According to a stone at the back of this church, Gibbs St Croydon Methodist Church was opened in 1886. This was the forerunner of the Malvern Hill Methodist Church which was opened on 4th November, 1911. The tower was erected in memory of Mrs Elen Reed who died in 1909. The window at the east end, "The Children's Window", was "the gift of the members and friends of Old Croydon - Gibbs St - Sunday School" and was dedicated on 16th August, 1912.

The original section of the Sunday School hall was dedicated on 2nd November, 1912 by Rev. Harold Wheen, General Secretary of the Sunday School department. The church building was later extended at the west end, and the extensions were opened on 18th June, 1927.

There are a number of war memorials in the church and many fine stained glass windows dedicated to former members. As we prepare to enter the twenty-first century, it is interesting to reflect on how the building tells us the story of the twentieth century. Momentous events did not leave the people unscathed. They came, they worshipped here, they enjoyed the fellowship of a worshipping community, they left their memorials, and either died here or moved on. Make your pilgrimage around the church not forgetting the baptismal font, the table, the pulpit, the communion rail, the doors. Say this prayer:

"We praise you, Lord God, for your faithful servants in every age; and we pray that we, with all who have died in the faith of Christ, may be brought to a joyful resurrection and the fulfilment of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord."
